Adventuring Classes

Here at The Quest Well Shoppe, we believe in tailoring your experience to you, not based simply on your broad goals (“I want to feel less stressed” or “I want to fix this stubborn muscle tension”) but who you are as a person, so you can truly live your best life. One of the most important concepts that helps us do this is figuring out your Adventuring Class.

In RPGs (role-playing games), a character’s Class often reveals the kinds of skills a person has an aptitude for. We believe life is much like an RPG, and every person is a player, the main character in their own story. In real life, the concept of a player’s Class goes beyond skills and aptitudes; it reflects a person’s values, motivations, and goals. A person’s Class is determined not by what they do for a living, but who they are as a person.

While certain Classes may be more inclined to certain lines of work, your job does not necessarily reflect your Class. It’s usually the other way around: your Class allows you to bring a particular perspective to your daily life, in solving problems, defeating enemies (even if the “enemy” is a spreadsheet, a picky customer or manager, or a messy section of programming code), and leveling up (achieving goals and enhancing your various skills).

What follows is the list of the basic Classes that most people fall into to one degree or another. Most people do not have a single Class; they have a primary Class, and they dip into one or a few other Classes.

  1. The Fighter. Fighters are driven by competition, and work hard to become the best version of themselves that they can be. In a group setting, they often serve as inspiration to strive for greatness, motivating others to push through challenges to accomplish the group’s goals.
  2. The Healer. Healers are motivated to help others who are struggling, providing support and comfort when the adventure is beating them down. Healers may be extroverts or introverts, but they are at their best when they are not alone, as their motivations reach outward, to help and heal those in need of assistance, whether physically or emotionally.
  3. The Rogue. Rogues are cunning professionals who thrive when they can work in the background; they are motivated by results, not accolades. They work fine by themselves, but in a group, they provide efficient problem-solving and an ambient sense of focus on the task at hand. They work hard, and they play hard.
  4. The Druid. Druids are at their best when they are in “natural” environments, caring for the planet and its inhabitants (whether human, animal, or plant). They live to see things thrive and blossom in a natural way, when those they care for are able to live their best lives, free from what they see as “artificial” or “unnatural” constructs.
  5. The Bard. Bards are performers; they thrive on attention and are the life of the party. They shine when they are able to put their varied skills on display for others to witness. Because of their charisma, they often rise to positions of leadership, where they inspire and motivate others to perform at their best.
  6. The Ranger. Rangers have a deep desire to experience new things. Unsatisfied with second-hand knowledge, they often prioritize travel, and thrive in jobs where they can mingle with many kinds of people. They may be trend-setters and early adopters of new innovations and styles, but their image is often understated.
  7. The Paladin. Paladins are passionate warriors for a cause, and dedicate their time and efforts to building a world where those they see as less fortunate can thrive. They pursue this goal with a kind of fervent zeal, spreading their message and recruiting others to help aid them in their fight for what they believe is right.
  8. The Wizard. Wizards are insatiably curious, motivated primarily by the pursuit of knowledge. Their knowledge is often both broad and deep, spanning a variety of topics and interconnecting them in unusual ways. They are particularly adept at lateral thinking, and are often seen as “nerds” by other Classes.
  9. The Swashbuckler. Swashbucklers are motivated first and foremost by freedom, both for themselves and others. They thrive in environments where they have a lot of leeway to tackle obstacles in their own way, even if it’s not the “normal” or “most correct” way. More than any other Class, they loathe the structure and restrictions society places on individuals.
  10. The Warlock. Warlocks are philosophers, fascinated by the depths of psychology and the human condition. More than anything else, they want to know what makes people tick, and they often go out of their way to challenge the beliefs people take for granted. They have both a method to their madness and a madness to their method, have an uncanny ability to break people out of stagnation.
  11. The Artisan. Artisans are creators above all else. They are driven to take the mundane and turn it into something new and beautiful, whether handcrafted goods or wordsmithing. They are hardworking and dedicated to their craft, and they are the most likely of all the Classes to achieve mastery in a single skill. They find great joy in sharing their work with others, in making the lives of others more beautiful, even if they can’t witness the effects of their work first-hand.
  12. The Monk. Monks are the most structured and pragmatic of the Classes. They strive to bring stability and order to a world teeming with chaos, and are meticulous, organized, and methodical. They prefer a life marked by simplicity, serenity, and contentment. Monks feel most at peace when things are all in their proper place, both literally and figuratively, and they love helping others achieve that same sense of stability.

You probably noticed as you read through the list that you feel aligned with one or two of those Classes, but you could think of people in your life who embody the others. (In future entries, we will go over each of these Classes in greater detail, along with more specialized versions of those Classes. As an example, Erin, the owner of the Quest Well Shoppe, is an Archmage, which is a highly specialized version of the Wizard Class.)

In life, as in most RPGs, a single person can’t easily accomplish their goals alone; they do best when working with others: their adventuring party. A good adventuring party has a variety of skills and perspectives that help each person accomplish their goals by enhancing their strengths and providing support to fill in the gaps in each person’s skills.

If you look at your social circles, you are likely to see this in action. A highly competitive fighter is aided by the compassionate care of a healer, who is in turn supported by the discipline and pragmatism of a monk, who is in turn inspired to strive for greatness by the will of the fighter. A ranger, a buccaneer, and a rogue may all work together toward the goal of attaining freedom to enjoy all that life has to offer. A druid may inspire a paladin to fight for animal welfare, a wizard may support them by researching and gaining knowledge of the science behind their stance, and a warlock may assist by picking apart the practical and emotional aspects of the issue in order to make a more compelling argument.

Here at The Quest Well Shoppe, we tailor your experience to your goals as a person, as a “player” who needs help in enhancing their abilities and overcoming obstacles, both alone and with their adventuring party. A good team relies on each other to achieve their goals. We see ourselves as your support, a place you and your adventuring party can come for healing, resources, and brainstorming, so you can travel on your journey better-equipped for the challenges you will face in your quest.
